Discovering Spring with BirdLife International

springaliveI came across this interesting annual program run by partners of Birdlife International in Europe. It’s a simple, fun survey that asks us to marvel at the return of some of the most fascinating migratory birds to Europe and to enter first sightings of swallows, swifts, storks and cuckoos onto the Spring Alive Website.

The program is aimed specifically at children 8-12, but all are encouraged to participate. Last year, Spring Alive apparently collected over 16,000 observations Europe-wide, and European coordinators were able to see that spring was slightly earlier in 2007 than in 2006.

It’s time to discover Spring!

For my own birdwatching notes of late – some new birds for my life-list:

Great-crested Grebe
Great Cormorant
Greater White-fronted Goose
Shelduck
Gadwall (Eurasian race)
Pochard
Curlew
Great Black-headed Gull
Red-rumped Wheatear
Song Thrush
Spectacled Warbler
