The fireworks last night were great, and the company while watching them was even better.
I’d say it’s appropriate to give a brief thought to what the day means – freedom from tyranny and from taxation w/o representation, and a number of truths that we hold self-evident. Fundamental to these rights that were afforded by the American revolution are the Right to Free Speech and the Right to Vote, and I find it patriotic to exercise those rights from time to time.
Jonathan Tasini, running against Hillary Clinton for the 2006 Democratic nomination for US Senator, has some very interesting insights into what he thinks the word Patriot means, that strike at the core of what it means to be progressive.
I turned to my trusty dictionary to find the definition of “patriot.” It says here, among other things, that a patriot is a person “devoted to the welfare of one’s country.” Aha…
